Introduction

According to a recent report, the estimated worth of AI in the global healthcare market was $3,120 million in 2018 and is projected to reach $24,700 million within the next eight years, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.9 percent. This surge in AI adoption is expected to generate annual revenue of $8.6 billion by 2025, with the scope of global revenue surpassing $34 billion. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is at the forefront of this AI revolution in healthcare. In 2017, the UAE became the first country in the world to appoint a designated minister for artificial intelligence, highlighting its commitment to technological advancements. Omar Bin Sultan Al Olama was appointed as the Minister of State for artificial intelligence, signaling the country’s determination to lead the way in AI innovation. This article explores how AI is strengthening healthcare in UAE.

AI Transforming Healthcare in UAE

The UAE’s Ministry of Health has been actively implementing AI technologies in the healthcare sector, leading to significant advancements and improvements in patient care. One notable example is the introduction of AI-enabled pods, which can monitor health and detect early signs of illness. Additionally, the Dubai Healthcare Authority (DHA) plans to utilize AI for the treatment of diabetes retinopathy, a severe disease that can cause permanent sight loss. These developments highlight the UAE’s commitment to leveraging AI to enhance healthcare outcomes. With more involvement of DHA we anticipate that, AI is strengthening healthcare in UAE.

Unique Developments in UAE Healthcare

The UAE’s Ministry of Health has recently launched the Enayati platform, an AI-based preventive healthcare system. This platform, part of the country’s National Agenda 2021, has the capability to predict potential health risks and monitor health indicators in individuals. Equipped with applications and smart systems, Enayati provides real-time health data to healthcare authorities, enabling them to take immediate action in case of any cardio-related issues. Furthermore, the introduction of 3D printing solutions in healthcare has allowed DHA hospitals to save costs and improve surgical outcomes through the use of anatomical models. AI is strengthening healthcare in UAE through a variety of mechanisms in healthcare.

Virtual Hospitals and Telemedicine on the Rise

The UAE is also witnessing a rise in virtual hospitals and telemedicine services, revolutionizing the way healthcare is delivered. Telecommunications company Du has partnered with the UAE’s Ministry of Health to develop smart healthcare services, including a telemedicine app. This collaboration aims to provide convenient and accessible healthcare to individuals, particularly in remote areas. Additionally, UK-based health technology company inHealth and Abu Dhabi-based AI company Saal have joined forces to leverage AI and launch cutting-edge healthcare solutions at a lower cost. This partnership will enhance healthcare services for residents of the UAE and the wider Middle East region.

AI’s Role in Inclusive Healthcare Practices

The integration of AI in the UAE’s healthcare system has the potential to promote inclusive healthcare practices. By leveraging AI technologies, healthcare providers can reach a wider population, including those in remote areas who may have limited access to healthcare facilities. AI-enabled telemedicine services can bridge the gap between patients and healthcare professionals, providing timely and efficient healthcare services. This inclusive approach aligns with the UAE’s vision of becoming a global tech hub and ensuring that healthcare is accessible to all.

Conclusion

In addition to these advancements, the UAE has embraced 3D printing technology in healthcare. The DHA has partnered with Sinterex, an additive manufacturing healthcare specialist firm, to establish 3D printing labs in hospitals. This initiative aims to enhance surgical procedures by utilizing anatomical models, potentially saving hospitals over $3,700 per surgery. The UAE is also witnessing a rise in virtual hospitals and telemedicine services which elevates the contribution of AI in its healthcare industry.
